Summer 2008 Course Schedule Now Available

Dear Families,

A big thank you to Judy Schachner for lots of fun and inspiration at her Pet Shop Writing workshop last Saturday afterrnoon! As you can see from these photos, the kids had a great time creating books about beloved pets as Judy shared her personal journals and the creatures, both alive and stuffed, that inspire her. Over $500 was raised for the Family Literacy Program of the Delaware County Literacy Council.

The following day, Judy's newest book, Skippyjon Jones and the Big Bones, received a full-page rave review in the Sunday New York Times, where Jerry Griswold said, "...here is linguistic fun and dual-language punning, or something like James Joyce's Ulysses for the elementary-school set." Congratulations, Judy!

Also, there is is still time to book your babysitter and reserve your place at the Write To Read fundraiser for Family Literacy this Saturday evening, May 17, from 7-9 PM at the home of Susan and Ben Brake at 301 Elm Avenue in Swarthmore. Donations are $25.00 per person and you are asked to bring a new copy of a favorite picture book that you or your children (or grandchildren) loved.

You'll inscribe your book on a special bookplate designed for the event, and your book will go to a family that has few or no books. Help us build a bridge of beloved books, while listening to the great guitar music of Greg Davis and dining on delicious food from 320 Market Cafe, the Swarthmore Coop, Bertucci's, Martindale's, Good Eatz, Wawa, Trader Joe's and Starbucks. Checks should be made out to the Delaware County Literacy Council. You can call SWR at 610-328-7950 for more information.

And... there is still time to sign up for summer sessions at the Swarthmore Writers Room. From comic book and fort making to science fiction and fantasy writing, come explore the world of words, adventure, science and art this summer!

Check out the full course schedule, and thank you for your support of the program!

Sincerely,

Joanne Sutton-Smith and the staff of the Swarthmore Writers Room

“My son loved the comic book class. He had taken other classes in this genre and this was his favorite. He was so sad to see it end!”
Karen K., Wallingford, PA

“The artwork and writing my son created in Nature Artists and Explorers allowed us to see what he sees. I feel like this class was designed just for him.”
Nikkola C., Media, PA

“This experience gave my daughter the inspiration and tools to conquer the ordinary and go beyond the average, and most importantly, to find out who she was as a writer.”
Linda M., Rutledge, PA

“Taking Reisa's program kept me writing when I didn't know exactly what to write. My college essays took on a shape and level of definition naturally.”
